This is the age of the ecosystem economy.

The three structural transitions of decarbonization, digital transformation, and demographic change are rewriting the assumptions of industry from the ground up. Platform-based ecosystems, represented by GAFAM, have created overwhelming value through “relationship design” rather than traditional resource-based competition. On the other hand, Japanese companies are at a serious crossroads. The triple whammy of a closed organizational culture, a vertically divided structure, and an overemphasis on short-term profits is hindering open innovation and trapping companies in the trap of optimizing themselves. The delay in the transition to electric vehicles and the stagnation of digital transformation are also caused by a lack of perspective on value creation for the entire industry and society.。

The conventional strategy of pursuing competitive advantage has reached its limit. What is required now is a paradigm shift from “entrenchment of resources” to “co-evolution of knowledge,” from “optimization of each company” to “optimization of the ecosystem,” and from “competition” to “co-creation.” This is a shift from an ego system (prioritizing self-interest) to an ecosystem (prioritizing social interest), and requires a 180-degree different strategic thinking. IM Lab is an innovative initiative to build an innovation ecosystem that goes beyond the conventional framework through collaboration between Japanese industry, universities, and the public sector. As a leader in ecosystem co-creation in Japan, IM Lab aims to form an open consortium-type innovation community in which companies, academia, and the public sector participate. IM Lab is operated by the Japan Innovation Network on behalf of Tokyo University of Science and OI.
